Biography

Alexander Van Alstyne was born in Manhattan, New York City. Although little is known of his early life and training, he became a respected organist and teacher in New York, despite being blind. He was hired by the New York Institute for the Blind where he met the gifted Fanny Crosby. They were married in 1858. She was already known as a hymn writer and she continued to use her maiden name on her husband’s insistence. Many of his compositions were settings of his wife’s poems. He died in New York City.
