Description: The Alma Redemptoris Mater is a Marian antiphon, sung during Compline and Lauds on the first Sunday of Advent until Christmas.
The motet closely follows the Gregorian setting. An attempt has been made to reproduce the characteristic rhythm and phrasing as faithfully as possible. The music will sound as “measureless” as possible. The Requiems by Pizzetti and Duruflé were a source of inspiration.
The motet consists of three parts with a coda. It starts with a unanimous opening statement by the tenor with a melisma on Alma, completed by the men. The second sentence is continued by sopranos with the other voices in opposition. The Et stella maris is a first radiant highlight with imitational stakes in all voices. The support for the fallen people is sung by the men in Surgere qui curat, ending in D minor. This concludes the first section.
The tenors start the second section with the proclamation of the miracle Tu quae genuisti, leading to a climax with the sound of the wonder of nature: Natura mirante. Parallel fifths lead to the Tuum Sanctum Genitorum.
With Virgo prius ac posterius, a third section starts entirely in a rocking 9/8 at a more lively tempo and with radiant conviction. The spout sumens illis is only brought by the altos. All voices bring the closing Ave.
In general, the tonality is floating. In the coda Peccatorum miserere, the main key of F is reached for the first time.
