Description: Giovambatista Lapini wrote some poems „a contrapposizione di Bembo“ for Laura Piccolomini de‘ Turchi; for most of them the connection with Bembo seems more subtle, but in this case he used the same rhymes and many of the words, but reverted the meaning. Corfini set both versions to music, see Amor è gratiosa e dolce voglia for the setting of Bembo‘s poem.

Italian.png Italian text

Amor è vitiosa e‘ngorda voglia
Che con viltà le basse menti affrena;
Amor d‘ogni bontà l‘anime spoglia
Et le trahe di diletto e mette in pena;
Amor l‘altere menti ir basso invoglia
E‘nfosca e turba ogni mente serena;
Amor aduggia il buon seme fecondo,
Et egli in somma è quel che guasta il mondo.

German.png German translation

Die Liebe ist Laster und Lüsternheit,
die mit Niedertracht die niederen Geister ergreift,
die Liebe entfernt aus den Seelen jegliche Güte
und führt sie weg von der Freude und hin zur Qual;
die Liebe lässt erhabene Geister hinabsteigen
und trübt und verwirrt jeden heiteren Geist;
die Liebe verdunkelt die gute fruchtbare Saaat,
und letztlich ist sie es, die die Welt verdirbt.

Love is vice and lechery,
that seizes the low-minded by meanness,
love deprives the souls of all goodness
and leads them away from joy and puts them into pain;
love makes sublime spirits step down low
and blurs and confounds every serene mind;
love obscures the good fertile seed,
and in the end it’s the one that spoils the world.
