Biography

Rev. Arnold Duncan Culley was born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. He received his education at the Royal College of Music; Emmanuel College, Cambridge; and the University of Durham. He was ordained priest in 1895. He held a variety of appointments during his lifetime: organist and choirmaster of St. Peter’s Church, Hammersmith, London; organist of Christ Church, Surbiton, Surrey; curate of the Chapel Royal, Brighton; appointed to Exeter Cathedral and became sub-organist (1900–06); appointed minor canon and precentor at Durham Cathedral and became organist and master of the choristers (1907–32). After retiring he was rector of Burwarton with Cleobury North, Shropshire, and rural dean of Stottesdon. His compositions were principally church music, including anthems and hymn tunes. FCO, ARCM.
