Basil Woodd

He was the son of Basil Woodd and Hannah Price, his father dying the year he was born. He was educated by Thomas Clarke, rector of Chesham Bois, Buckinghamshire and went up to Trinity College, Oxford in 1778 (BA 1782, MA 1785) He was ordained deacon in the Church of England in 1783, and priested in 1784. He was a noted preacher, being lecturer at St Peter's Cornhill (City of London) from 1784-1808 and preacher at Bentinck Chapel, Marylebone, London from 1785. In 1808, he became rector of Drayton Beauchamp, Buckinghamshire. He was twice married, firstly to Ann Wood and, after her death in 1791, to Sophia Sarah Jupp, who also predeceased him. He founded many schools and was an active member of several religious societies, including the Church Missionary Society and the British and Foreign Bible Society. He published devotional works, a metrical psalter and several hymns.
