Biography

Frederick William Boyton Smith was born at Dorchester, England. He was educated at Hereford Cathedral and at Winchester Cathedral under Samuel Sebastian Wesley. He was organist at Dorchester Parish Church and director of the Dorchester Orchestral Vocal Association. He was a friend of novelist Thomas Hardy and set many of the writer’s poems to music. His compositions include services, anthems, organ pieces, many piano pieces, songs and part-songs. His brother Edward Sydney Smith was an accomplished pianist and composer and his sister Clara was a teacher of music. He died in Dorchester.
