General Information

Title: By the hearth-stone
Composer: Jennifer Bastable
Lyricist: Henry Newbolt
Number of voices: 3vv   Voicings: SSS, AAA, TTT or BBB
Genre: SecularPartsong

Language: English
Instruments: A cappella

First published:
Description: Sir Henry Newbolt's poem, set for three closely-tuned voices singing in the Frigian mode. The range of each part is only an octave, so there is considerable scope for transposition to suit the forces available. The uploaded pdfs give:

(i) in E - for AAA - range middle C to upper C

(ii) in G# - for SSS or TTT - range E to E within the stave

(iii) bass clef in E - for three baritones - range C to middle C

(iv) bass clef in C - for BBB - range G to G within the stave

As the tune is in the top line, the piece could also be sung solo or unison, with two accompanying instruments, provided the close tuning is maintained, ie not instruments that play an octave up or down from written pitch.

By the hearth-stone
She sits alone,
The long night bearing:
With eyes that gleam
Into the dream
Of the firelight staring.

Low and more low
The dying glow
Burns in the embers;
She nothing heeds
And nothing needs---
Only remembers.
