Liturgical drama in its narrowest definition refers to a repertory that arose in the 12th century of Latin plays sung in church, preceding the later Mystery Plays. Theatrical spectacles in church were banned by Innocent III (papacy from 1198-1216) but Gregory IX (1227-41) clarified that plays such as "The Lord's Manger, Herod, The Magi, Rachel Lamenting Her Children &c…which are performed to excite devotion" were not included in the prohibition.
