Category talk:Morning Canticles

I noticed this page has a mix of title and composer alphabetizing. I assume users of this page will be looking for a specific canticle, and have removed [[Category:Morning Canticles|Ireland, John]] from Te Deum in F Major (John Ireland). Or perhaps I should have replaced it with [[Category:Morning Canticles|Te Deum Ireland, John]]? Richard Mix 22:31, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

I'd favour retaining the sort keys to order the category by composer surname, and adding these to pages which don't already have them, since:
  1. there is a significantly smaller number of distinct canticles than composer surnames, making the surnames more useful to structure this page category,
  2. individual text pages exist for the specific texts, if users are looking for a setting of a particular canticle and don't want to see the other morning canticles,
  3. the composer name is distinctive and stable, whereas descriptions of the canticles may be more variable - for example in the current page, we have, as well as separate entries for 'Jubilate', 'Te Deum', etc., combined pages for settings of more than one canticle. For example, if sorting by page title rather than composer, 'Te Deum and Jubilate' would sort under 'T', even though it would contain a Jubilate, while 'Morning Service' would sort under M, but might include either a Jubilate or a Benedictus. A similar situation would apply to the larger Category:Evening Canticles, which is more uniformly sorted by composer. Cydonia 13:58, 12 March 2012 (CDT)
In the absence of any further comments on the above, as most of the items in this category appeared to already have sort parameters to order them by composer surname, and to maintain consistency with Category:Evening Canticles, I have added these parameters to the few pages currently in the category which didn't already have them, and added text to the category page to note that the sorting is by surname.
