Christmas comes but once a year
For a gay Ladye!
Rich and costly be her clothes,
Satin kirtle, silken hose!
Decked with jewels brought from far,
She shall shine like any star!

2  See the yule-log blazes high,
Lends us light that we may spy
A gay Ladye!
Let no treason here by seen,
She shall be our Winter Queen!
We'll remain her subjects free,
And we'll drink her health in loyalty!

3  What though frost and snow unite
Out of doors to pinch and bite
Ev'ry gay Ladye!
Let them play their envious parts,
She'll find warmth in all our hearts!
There, in spite of both, she'll reign,
Till they wend them northward home again.

4  While here we sing our melody,
Let each cup high crownèd be,
For a gay Ladye!
There let Cupid dip his dart,
Ah, fair ladies, do not start!
Wine, that makes e'en cowards bold,
May hinder Love from catching a cold!
