Biography
David Hayden Lloyde was born in Springfield, Massachusetts. When he was three, his family moved to Bureau County, Illinois, where his father established a school and was a music teacher. He received his early training from his father, sang in the church choir at age 11, and became a singing leader in the church. He received his education in the local schools and later attended Judson College at La Salle and Illinois College at Jacksonville. He studied music with Philip P. Bliss and began leading musical institutes and conventions. In 1874-75, he filled a vacancy in the vocal music department at the University of Illinois. He settled in Champaign and opened the Lloyde Book and Music Store to serve the students at the University of Illinois. His store supplied books and supplies, music, stationery, toys, photographic supplies, drawing instruments, pianos, organs, violins and small musical instruments, sewing machines, typewriters, talking machines and sporting goods, and novelties for holiday and other seasonal events. He was active in the Baptist Church and wrote many hymns and Sunday-School songs. He died in Champaign.
