Biography

Italian composer and organist, father of Francesco Cavalli (the name Cavalli was given to him by his protector, the Venetian noble Federico Cavalli, governor of Crema from 1614 to 1616). He was maestro di cappella, and perhaps also organist, of the cathedral of Crema, probably from the late 1590s until 1604. He published Madrigals for five voices… first book (Venice, 1604). Two other pieces by him in Il primo libro de'madrigali a cinque voci (Venice, 1617) by his pupil G.B. Leonetti; one of these is a pastoral ballet for eight voices in honor of Federico Cavalli.
