Description:  "Scoring" scored as Real Tennis. That game, particularly popular under Francois I (France) and Henry VIII (England), involved rules for scoring partly dependent upon in which part of the court a given shot had been placed. c.f. reaching bases in Baseball. The conceit is not original to Du Tertre; see also that of Pierre Passereau.

French text Ieunes espritz qui ne sçavez pas comprendre Comment il fault gaigner le ieu d'aymer Le ieu de paulme à tous vous peult apprendre Qu'amour se doibt pour l'esteuf estimer Le premier coup que quinze on veult nommer Cest le devis au baiser cest le trente: Puis au toucher du tetin à la fente Quarante cinq peult compter l'amoureux Mais pour gaigner le ieu, qui tant contente, Il faut frapper tout droit à lentredeux.

French text  modernized Jeunes esprits, qui ne savez pas comprendre Comment il faut gagner le jeu d'aimer: Le jeu de paulme à tous vous peut apprendre Qu'amour se doit pour l'éteuf estimer. Le premier coup que quinze on veut nommer, C'est le devis au baiser c'est le trente: Puis au toucher du tétin à la fente Quarante-cinq peut compter l'amoureux; Mais pour gagner le jeu, qui tant contente, Il faut frapper tout droit à l'entredeux.

English translation You bright young things, who don't understand How to win in the game of love; The game of tennis can teach you How to score the ball in love. You can count the first touch as the fifteen, and then kissing is the thirty: Then the lustful can reckon touching The nipple as the grill, forty-five; But to win the game, ultimate satisfaction, One needs to hit the winning gallery squarely.
