Biography
John Wainwright was born in Stockport
in 1723, and baptised at St Mary's Church on 14 April 1723, the son of John Wainwright, 'joyner', and his wife Mary. He married Anne Clarkson, also of Stockport, at St. Peter's, Blackley on 30 December 1746. His only known musical publication is A Collection of Psalm Tunes, Anthems, Hymns, and Chants: it can be dated by an advertisement in the Derby Mercury on 3 October 1766, which describes the book as 'This Day … published'. The collection includes 21 metrical psalm tunes, 4 anthems, 2 settings of Christmas hymns by John Byrom, and 6 chants: the only item which is now in widespread use is one of the Christmas hymns, 'Christians, awake, salute the happy morn'
. On 12 May 1767 Wainwright was appointed organist at the Collegiate Church of Manchester (now Manchester Cathedral). He was buried at St. Mary's, Stockport on 28 January 1768, and was succeeded as organist of Manchester by his son Robert.
