Las, je sçay bien que je feis grande offence
Quand je voulus contre amour tenir fort,
Il m'en prend mal, aussi avois je tort
De vouloir faire à ung dieu résistance
Duquel chascun redoubte la puissance,
Tant fist d'effort qu'il print d'assault mon cueur
Et meist le feu dedans à grand oultrance
En lieu conquis, ainsi fait le vainqueur.

Alas, I know full well that I was very much at fault
when I tried to hold out against love.
I am suffering for it, and it was wrong of me
to think I could resist a god
whose power all fear.
He made such determined efforts that he took my heart by storm
and laid it waste with fire,
just as the victor does in a place that he has conquered.
