From a 1740 letter of Johann Gottfried Walther we learn that the itinerant Thuringian violinist and horn player was "found a few years ago, frozen to death on the highway not far from Weimar" and calling him "a raw man who kept to the villages, neither entering a church nor partaking of the Sacrament". Over 100 cantatas are extant.
