Weckt mich mein Herz, an dich zu denken,
Da doch gesunde Jugend schlafen mag.
Hell ist mein Aug um Mitternacht,
Heller als frühe Morgenglocken:
Wann hättst du je mein gedacht?
Wär ich ein Fischer, stünd' ich auf,
Trüge mein Netz hinab zum Flusse,
Trüg' herzlich froh die Fische zum Verkauf.
In der Mühle, bei Licht, der Müllerknecht
Tummelt sich, alle Gänge klappern;
[Tummel, tummel, tum, tum, tum]
So rüstig Treiben wär mir eben recht!
Weh, aber ich! o armer Tropf!
Muß auf dem Lager mich müßig grämen,
Ein ungebärdig Mutterkind im Kopf!

In early morn, before daylight,
my heart wakes me: of you I’m thinking,
for only healthy fellows sleep at night.
My eyes are bright at midnight dark,
clearer by far than bells of morning.
Had you a thought of me to mark?
Were I a fisherman, I would rise,
carry my fish nets to the river,
and happily to market bring my prize.
In the mill, the worker under lights,
moves about, all the gears a-rumbling;
[Tummel, tummel, tum, tum, tum]
that busy labor were for me just right.
So pity me, poor, sorry lad,
stretched on my couch, full of idle mis’ry,
a naughty, little mama’s boy, sent to bed!
