Burnished steel, mosaic tiles,
Rusty hinges, plastic,
Bolts and tape and rubber bands,
Panes of stained glass,
Paste and wax...
Parts accrue, parts disappear;
Patiently you labor.
Unafraid, accepting,
Daring public ridicule,
You take the thing out on the street and run it!

Glowing, charged, magnetic,
It draws astonished strangers
To its field.
They don't perceive
The mismatched parts,
The tentative cohesiveness
Of spit and baling wire.
