Bachelors are we,
Can the joys of love compare,
O sparkling wine, with thee?
Oh, my spirit is dismayed,
Oh, my heart is sore,
I've to wife a scolding jade,
Squalling brats I find a bore.
Is thy spirit so dismayed,
Is thy heart so sore?
See, the goblet offers aid,
Do but drink, and woes are o'er.
Ev'ry night and ev'ry morn,
Her vile clapper's rung,
Death, thou'rt sharper than a thorn,
Sharper still is woman's tongue.
Merry, and free from pain and care,
Bachelors are we,
Ne'er shall chains our hearts ensnare,
Drink to wine and liberty.
