Einige Quellen des Textes haben „Röslein“, aber es gab ein Sprichwort „Bauer, lass die Rösslein stan, sie sind für einen Edelmann“, um auszudrücken, dass etwas einen nichts anging.
The stinging nettle was a symbol of love’s burning.

German text O Baurenknecht, lass mir die Rösslein stan, sie sein nicht dein, du trägst wohl noch von Nesselkraut ein Kränzelein. Das Nesselkraut ist gar bitter und herb und brennt mich sehr, verlorn hab ich mein schönes Lieb, das reut mich sehr. Es reut mich sehr und tut meim Herzen weh, gesegn dich Gott, mein feiner Buhl, ich seh dich nu und nimmermehr.

English translation O farmhand, leave the horses alone, they are not yours, you still wear a wreath made from nettles. The nettle herb is very bitter and harsh and burns me much, I have lost my beutiful love, it much grieves me. It grieves me and does hurt my heart, Gob bless you, my pretty love, I will see you nevermore. Translation by Gerhard Weydt
