    On the glassy waters
Golden sunbeams play,
    Round us dance the ripples
In the solar ray,
        The vessels near
        Our voices hear,
And catch the passing strain;
        In sounds well known,
        Some friendly tone,
Repeats the glad refrain.

Tra la la la la la la la la,
Tra la la la la la la!

    On the placid river,
’Neath the glowing sky,
    Pleasant is our labour,
Time flits quickly by;
        Oh, who so free
        From care are we,
Grief can no shadows bring,
        But blythe and gay,
        By night and day,
We ply our oars and sing.

    Now the sun is sinking,
Homeward turn the prow,
    Loving hearts impatient
Wait our coming now.
        We haste ashore,
        Our toil is o’er,
Bright river fare-thee-well,
        ’Till Sol’s last ray
        Has pass’d away,
Loud let our chorus swell.
