Description: Guerrero wrote this madrigal when he was young, with the text “Prado Verde y Florido”, but he did not publish it (nor his other secular pieces). During his last years, his pupils convinced him to edit these pieces. He accepted, but adding a religious text (“a lo divino”), and Pan divino y gracioso appeared (with other contrafacta) in Canciones y villanescas espirituales, Venice, 1589

Guerrero escribió esta obra en su juventud con el texto “Prado Verde y Florido”, aunque no la publicó, como ocurrió con el resto de su obra profana. Al final de sus días, sus discípulos le convencieron de que las editara. Lo hizo, aunque componiéndolas también “a lo divino”, es decir, añadiendo un texto religioso (“Pan divino, gracioso” en este caso). Aparecieron en la obra “Canciones y Villanescas espirituales”, Venecia 1589

Spanish text Prado verde y florido Prado verde y florido, fuente clara, alegres arboledas y sombrías; pues veis las penas mías cada hora, contadlas blandamente a mi pastora; que, si conmigo es dura, quizá la ablandará vuestra frescura. El fresco y manso viento que os alegra está de mis suspiros inflamado, y, pues os ha dañado hasta agora, pedid vuestro remedio a mi pastora; que, si conmigo es dura, quizá la ablandará vuestra frescura.

sacred text Pan divino, gracioso Pan divino, gracioso, sacrosanto, manjar que da sustento al alma mía; dichoso fue aquel día, punto y hora, que en tales dos especies Cristo mora; que, si el alma está dura, aquí se ablandará con tal dulzura. El pan que estás mirando, alma mía, es Dios que en tí reparte gracia y vida, y, pues que tal comida te mejora, no dudes de comerla desde agora, que, aunque estuvieres dura, aquí te ablandarás con tal dulzura.
