Biography

Robert Henry Waithman was born in St. Marylebone, Middlesex, England, grandson of Irishman Robert Waithman (1764–1833), a draper who founded “Waithman & Co, Drapers and Shawl warehouse” on Fleet Street, later named “Waithman & Sons.” The elder Robert was a person of means, councilman for the Farringdon Without Ward, and Waithman Street in London is named after him. Robert Henry lived in London and later in East-Bourne, Sussex. He was a silk broker for a few years, then was able to live on his own means the remainder of his life. He was active in the musical world and served as Secretary to the East-Bourne Musical Society. He died on the Isle of Wight.
