Composer

Sources I looked at, such as RISM, the score on the Weihnachtsliederbuch (Cornelius Freundt) page, and the 1950s print linked to from that page, all say the Composer of this work is Anonymous. What is the source of the Verdelot attribution? GeoffG (talk) 08:04, 12 February 2022 (UTC)

The source I used for the list of works on this page is IMSLP. There, attribution was changed to Verdelot by Ulrich Alpers in 2018; he didn't give his reasons. Several other scores I looked at indicated that Verdelot set this anonymous work; the date was given as 1537, which would be after Verdelot's death. Perhaps the attribution to Verdelot was made in some 1537 book? I don't have the resources to explore further. Several other composers have set this chant; one source says that Michael Praetorius' setting was based on Verdelot's. From this distance, I think this work could be attributed to Verdelot, as it has been to others who set the chant (arranged it polyphonically). — Barry Johnston (talk) 16:22, 12 February 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, Barry! That is enough for me to keep him as the Composer as well. I have no doubt there is a source out there I have yet to discover. I looked through Verdelot's third and second book of madrigals for four voices (both printed/reprinted in 1537), thinking maybe it was a contrafact of something there, but no luck. I will keep looking! GeoffG (talk) 19:48, 12 February 2022 (UTC)
