English text
What friendly light shines from yonder hill,
While stars the heavens with splendour fill?
It gleams from the house of God afar,
Inviting the pilgrim to evening prayer.
What heavenly strains from the chapel resound,
And fill with joy the hearts thither bound!
Sweet voices we hear come floating high,
Uplifting a psalm to the Lord on high.
What silvery tones are those we hear,
Whose echo sounds afar and near?
They come from the bell in yonder tower,
That tells all around 'tis the vesper hour.
