Original text and translations
I could not breathe the parting word, Farewell;
I strove to quell my feelings for thy sake;
I did not dare the mournful truth to tell;
I smil'd, although my heart was like to break.
Oh! gentle, loving girl, thou knewest this,
And blest me with affection's dearest ray.
I'll dwell upon the mem'ry of that kiss,
And long for thy return while thou'rt away,
I know thou'lt ne'er forget when thou art gone,
Where'er thy wand'ring footsteps chance to rove,
There liveth one, e'en though he be alone,
Who loves thee truly with unchanging love.
Oh! happy moment past, yet full of bliss,
How can I tell, how can I tell how much thou didst repay?
I'll feast upon the mem'ry of that kiss,
And pray for thy return while thou'rt away!
