The lovely flow’r that now is blooming
On Nature’s lawn of driven snow,
Appears to tell us Spring is coming,
And dreary Winter soon will go.
Each passing breath of wind will shake it,
So pliant is its tender form,
You’d think the raging north would break it,
But no! but no! it triumphs o’er the storm.
Gay Daffodils and meek-eyed primroses,
The crimson-spotted cowslip too,
The golden saffron that uncloses
Its cup to catch the morning dew will soon appear,
And must thou die then, sweet floweret,
Sweet herald of their day,
Spring will return with brighter skies,
The snowdrop meekly says and dies.
Yes! sweetest flower, when thou art blooming
On Nature’s lawn of driven snow,
Thou’rt sent to tell us Spring is coming,
To tell us Winter soon will go.
O when we mourn for joys departed,
Let us remember this weak thing,
That whispers to the broken hearted,
that whispers to the broken hearted,
New joys will come like flowers of Spring.
