Tu ridi sempre mai
Per darmi pen’ e guai.
Fingi volermi bene,
Crudel, per darmi pene.
Non so perche lo fai,
Forse t’accorgerai
Che se mi fai morire
Non gioverà pentire.
Ma se tu voi (vuoi) ch’io mora
Sia pur’ all buon’ hora,
Con tutto il falso core (cuore)
Pur sentirai dolore.
Soccorrimi, ben mio,
A questo mio desio
Perche se voi volete,
Donar vita potete.

English translation

All you do is laugh, causing me pain and heartache.
You pretend to wish me well, cruel beauty, to cause me suffering.
I don’t know why you do it. Perhaps you will come to realise
that if you cause my death, it will be too late to repent of it.
But if in the end you want me to die,
Then your heart, false though it is, will feel pain.
Please, my beloved, grant me my wish,
because if you want to, you can give me life.
