Edition notes: The original time signature for bars 0-37 is retorted time. The opening anacrusis (bar 0) is preceded in the source with rests to make a full bar: these rests have been omitted from the present edition. The alto part is printed in the source in the treble clef, an octave above sounding pitch. The trill shown on the G on the last crotchet of bar 7 in the second instrumental part in this edition is printed in the source over the dotted minim F♯ in the following bar. The verses underlaid in the source are verse 7 (in bars 11-37) and verse 8 (in bars 38-55), and no indication is given as to whether the remaining two verses should also be sung. Verse 9 is identical to verse 7, and verse 10 has been editorially added under verse 8 in the chorus (bars 38-55) in the present edition: it is suggested that the piece is sung twice through (with internal repeats both times), using the text of verse 7/9 for the tenor & bass duet both times, and the text of verse 8 for the chorus the first time and that of verse 9 for the chorus the second time.
