Description: The Nunc dimittis (Latin for: now let go), or the Song of Simeon, is a hymn that Simeon recited when he met Jesus and his parents in the temple. The text is found in the Gospel of Luke 2:29-32. It is also included in the Orthodox collection of Odes. Simeon had received a promise from the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Messiah. The moment he sees Jesus in the temple, this promise is fulfilled and he begins to sing the hymn.
