Description: Tota pulchra es is a Catholic prayer written in the fourth century. The title means “You are perfectly beautiful” (referring to the Virgin Mary). It speaks of her Immaculate Conception. Some verses are used as antiphons for the feast of the Immaculate Conception. It takes part of the text from the Book of Judith and another part from the Song of Songs, namely 4:7.
This piece uses a number of stanzas from Chapter 4 of the Song of Songs. This is not the text of the original prayer, which begins with verse 7. This piece also begins with verse 7, which is the core of Chapter 4 of the Song of Songs. “You are completely beautiful, my love; there is no flaw in you.” Verse 9 then describes how the writer is captivated by, and has lost his heart to, her eyes. The eyes are mentioned again in verse 1, where they are compared to the eyes of a dove and the hair to a flock of goats.
