Description: Tota pulchra es is a Catholic prayer written in the fourth century. The title means “You are perfectly beautiful” (referring to the Virgin Mary). It speaks of her Immaculate Conception. Some verses are used as antiphons for the feast of the Immaculate Conception. It takes part of the text from the Book of Judith and another part from the Song of Songs, namely 4:7. This piece uses a number of stanzas from Chapter 4 of the Song of Songs. This is not the text of the original prayer, which begins with verse 7. This piece also begins with verse 7, which is the core of Chapter 4 of the Song of Songs. “You are completely beautiful, my love; there is no flaw in you.” Verse 9 then describes how the writer is captivated by, and has lost his heart to, her eyes. The eyes are mentioned again in verse 1, where they are compared to the eyes of a dove and the hair to a flock of goats.

4.7
Tota pulchra es, amica mea
et macula non est in te.

Vulnerasti cor meum soror mea sponsa
vulnerasti cor meum in uno oculorum tuorum
et in uno crine colli tui.
4.7
Tota pulchra es, amica mea.
4.1
Quam pulchra es, amica mea,
quam pulchra es,
oculi tui columbarum absque eo quod intrinsecus latet,
capilli tui sicut greges caprarum,
quae ascenderunt de monte Galaad.
4.7
Tota pulchra es, amica mea
et macula non est in te.
4.6
Donec adspiret dies
et inclinentur umbrae vadam
ad montem murrae et ad collem turis.

Geheel zijt gij schoon, Mijn vriendin,
en er is geen gebrek aan u.

Gij hebt Mij het hart genomen, Mijn zuster, o bruid!
gij hebt Mij het hart genomen,
met een van uw ogen, met een keten van uw hals.

Geheel zijt gij schoon, Mijn vriendin.

Zie, gij zijt schoon, Mijn vriendin!
zie, gij zijt schoon;
uw ogen zijn duiven ogen tussen uw vlechten;
uw haar is als een kudde geiten,
die het gras van den berg Gileads afscheren.

Geheel zijt gij schoon, Mijn vriendin,
en er is geen gebrek aan u.

Totdat de dag aankomt, en de schaduwen vlieden,
zal Ik gaan tot den mirreberg,
en tot den wierookheuvel.

Geheel zijt gij schoon, Mijn vriendin.
