General Information

Title: A siolos molenos
Composer: Gabriel Garcia de Mendoza

Number of voices: 4vv   Voicing: SAAT

Genre: SacredVillancico

Language: Mexican Creole
Instruments: Basso continuo
Published: 1742

Description: A Christmas "villancico de negros". The text is obscure and unclear in places, although the general theme is focused on admiration of the Christ child in the manger. This is one of a large number of "villancicos de negros" or "negrillas" in manuscript in the Música Colonial Archive. They are mostly (i) by obscure composers and (ii) in illegible microfilmed manuscripts, this one being an exception to (ii).
