Biography

Alphonsus Maria de Liguori was an Italian bishop, and the founder of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Latin: Congregatio Sanctissimi Redemptoris): members of the order are known as Redemptorists. Born into a noble Neapolitan family, he initially trained and worked as a lawyer, before abandoning this career in 1723 and undertaking training for the priesthood. He was ordained in 1726, founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer in 1732, and was ordained Bishop of Sant'Agata de' Goti in 1762. He was canonized in 1839.
