Italian text Ardemmo insieme bella donna ed io di sì subito ardore Al lampeggiar dell’un’ e l’altro sguardo, Che se fusse tra noi pari il desio. O che soave amore, Parean dir gl’occhi suoi Verso me scintillando, Ardi ch’io ardo. Lasso, m’aviddi poi, Quand’il mio ben mi fu celato e tolto, Che l’un’ ardea nel cor, l’altra nel volto.

German translation Wir brannten gemeinsam, die schöne Frau und ich, mit so plötzlicher Glut beim Aufblitzen des einen oder anderen Blicks, als ob bei beiden die gleiche Sehnsucht herschte. O welch süße Liebe, schienen ihre Augen zu sagen, die zu mir her funkelten, brenne, weil ich brenne! Ach, ich wurde gewahr, als meine Liebe mir verdeckt und entzogen wurde, dass einer im Herzen brannte, die andere im Gesicht. Translation by Gerhard Weydt

English translation We blazed together, the beautiful lady and me, by such a sudden fervour at the flashing of one or the other glance, as if between us the same desire reigned. O what a sweet love, her eyes seemed to say, that glistened to me, burn, because, I burn! Alas, I then realised, when my love was hidden and withdrawn from me, that one of us burned in the heart, the other in the face. Translation by Gerhard Weydt
