Description:  Blazhen muzh (Blessed is the man) is part of the Slavic orthodox liturgy (Vespers). Its best-known choral a cappella version was composed by Sergey Rakhmaninoff in the early twentieth century. For all songs in his Vespers Rakhmaninoff used the original Old Church Slavonic texts. However, another version of Rakhmaninoff's Vespers was published with English translations which he had authorised.

In my composition I have used the Old Church Slavonic text, which I feel renders the content and meaning of the song more authentic and colourful. As far as the lyrics in the score are concerned singers who can read the cyrillic alphabet may want to read the top line. For those who cannot I have added a semi-phonetic transcription in the bottom line. On my personal website I have published a document on the pronunciation of Old Church Slavonic with some guidelines. Please click on the link below.

English.png English translation

Blessed is the man, who walks not in the
counsel of the wicked. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice in Him
with trembling.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Arise, O Lord! Save me, O my God!
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Salvation is of the Lord; and Thy blessing is upon Thy people.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to
the Holy Spirit, both now and ever and unto
the ages of ages. Amen.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee, O God!
