General Information

Title: Bright morning stars
Composer: Maggie Furtak

Number of voices: 4vv   Voicing: SSAA

Genre: SacredAnthem

Language: English
Instruments: a cappella
Published: 2012

Description: Another tricky one, but this time for groups with a glorious rich alto section. (This one is for you Nella, Sue, Katrina! Revel in your awesome lowness!) The 2nd alto line takes a real 2nd alto, or can be sung by a tenor. The 1st alto line is also really appropriate for a 2nd alto. The 2nd soprano line can be sung by a 1st alto. Get ready to get down low, everybody! Lovely as a quartet or octet. Also nice for a larger group. Tricky, tricky! Dissonance, parts moving every which a-way, big gaping rests that need a crisp cut-off for the previous phrase. To let it swing along comfortably, but precisely enough that the parts don't muddy each other is a challenge.

Bright morning stars are rising,
day is breaking in my soul.
Where are our dear mothers?
They're down in the valley a' praying.
Day is breaking in my soul.
Where are our dear fathers?
They've gone up to heaven a' shouting,
and day is breaking in my soul.
