General Information

Title: Candide perle
Composer: Antonio Bicci
Lyricist:

Number of voices: 6vv   Voicing: SSATTB
Genre: SecularMadrigal

Language: Italian
Instruments: A cappella

First published: 1591 in Il quinto libro de madrigali a sei voci, no. 4
    2nd published: 1605 in Nervi d'Orfeo, no. 60
Description: This madrigal is sometimes attributed to Luca Marenzio, simply because of the fact that it was published in his 5th book for six voices, but it is clearly stated there that it is "del Sig. Antonio Bicci", like Bicci's madrigal Deh, dolc'anima mia, non pianger più. Genae tuae Virgo is a sacred contrafact of this work by Simone Molinaro, from his Fatiche Spirituali of 1610.

Candide perle e voi, labbra ridenti,
Che Nettare spargete,
Deh perché non volete
Questi sospiri ardenti?
Ahi, che tra loro è pur l'anima mia,
Che baciar vi desia.

German.png German translation

Weiße Perlen und ihr, lachende Lippen,
die ihr Nektar verströmt,
ach, warum verschmäht ihr
diese inbrünstigen Seufzer?
O weh, da zwischen ihnen doch meine Seele weilt ,
die euch zu küssen verlangt.

Translation by Gerhard Weydt

White pearls and you, smiling lips,
that pour out nectar,
oh, why do you despise
these ardent sighs?
Alas, that between them dwells my soul,
which desires to kiss you.

Translation by Gerhard Weydt

Blanches perles, et vous, lèvres riants,
qui versez du nectar,
ah, pourquoi refusez-vous
ces soupirs ardents?
Hélas, que entre eux se trouve bien mon âme,
qui désire de vous baiser.
