Pope Clement VIII, by decree of the Inquisition of 6 Sept., 1601, limited the numerous litanies that had become popular by the Renaissance to two: The Litany of the Saints (Litania de omnibus Sanctis, still used at the Easter Vigil and the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary (or Litany of Loreto, Litaniae Lauretanae). There are currently 6 Litanies approved for public use by Catholics:

  • The Litany of the Holy Name of Jesus
  • The Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
  • The Litany of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus
  • The Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary (also known as the Litany of Loreto)
  • The Litany of St. Joseph
  • The Litany of the Saints

There is also a Lutheran German Litany.
