Pope Clement VIII, by decree of the Inquisition of 6 Sept., 1601, limited the numerous litanies that had become popular by the Renaissance to two: The Litany of the Saints (still used at the Easter Vigil) and the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary. There are currently 6 Litanies approved for public use by Catholics:
- The Litany of the Holy Name of Jesus (Litaniae de nomine Jesu)
- The Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Litaniae cordis sanctae Jesu)
- The Litany of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus (Litaniae de sacratissimo corde Jesu)
- The Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary (also known as the Litany of Loreto or Litaniae Lauretanae)
- The Litany of St. Joseph (Litaniae Sancti Joseph)
- The Litany of the Saints (Litania de omnibus Sanctis)
There is also a Lutheran German Litany.
