English text
“Clorinda false, adieu thy love torments me;
Let Thyrsis have thy heart, since he contents thee.
O grief and bitter anguish,
for thee I languish.
fain I alas would hide it.
O but who can abide it?
I can, I cannot I abide it.
Adieu, adieu, adieu then,
farewell leave me, death now desiring,
thou hast, lo, thy requiring.”
Thus spake Philistus, on his hook relying,
and sweetly, sweetly, sweetly fell adying.
French translation
"Traîtresse Clorinda, adieu ton amour me tourmente;
Adieu, adieu, adieu alors,
Pars, laisse-moi, désirant maintenant la mort,
Tu as, oui, tes exigences."
