Description: The Corona dei mesi (Cicle of the Months) is a cycle of 12 sonnets on the 12 months of the year by the 13th century Italian poet Folgòre da San Gimignano (1280-1330). Only a few works of his have survived, of which this cycle is the best known.

Given the twelve months, it is obvious to do something with the twelve tones of the octave. I have chosen to arrange the keys successively from C one semitone higher, alternating major and minor. So it has not become a strict succession of the circle of fifths. The parts connect to each other on a quarterly basis. In principle, each piece ends in the key of the next movement, or leads to it musically. The documents are therefore preferably coupled on a quarterly basis.

In addition, there is an alternation between 4-part mixed choir, 3-part women and men's choir and 6-part mixed choir.

The last part starts in B and ends again in C, completing the “Corona”.

  • D’aprile (in Es - SSA)

D’april vi dono la gentil campagna
tutta fiorita di bell’erba fresca:
fontane d’acqua che non vi rincresca,
donn’e donzelle per vostra compagna,

ambianti palafren, destrier di Spagna
e gente costumata a la francesca;

Di maggio sì vi do molti cavagli
e tutti quanti siano affrenatori,
portanti tutti, dritti corritori;
pettorali, testère de sonagli,

bandère con coverte a molti ‘ntagli
di zendadi e di tutti li colori;
le targhe a modo degli armeggiatori;
viuole, rose, fior, ch’ogn’om abbagli;

e rompere e fiaccar bigordi e lance,
e piover da fenestre e da balconi
en giù ghirlande, e’n sù melerance;

e pulzellette gioveni e garzoni

e faccia mille rami e fiumicelli,
ferendo per giardin e praticelli
e rinfrescando la menuta erbetta.

Aranci e cedri, dàttili e lumie
e tutte l’altre frutte savorose
empergolate siano per le vie;

e le gente vi sian tutte amorose
e faccianvisi tante cortesie,
ch’a tutto ‘l mondo siano grazïose.

  • April

In april geef ik je lieflijke velden
vol bloemen en fris gras
fonteinen met water die je plezieren,
vrouwen en meisjes als gezelschap,

reispaarden, strijdpaarden uit Spanje
en mensen gekleed op z’n frans;

  • Mei

In mei geef ik je veel paarden
en ze zijn allemaal makkelijk te beteugelen,
beproefde dragers, snelle dravers;
tuigage en hoofdstellen voorzien van belletjes,

rijk versierde vaandels en kleden
van zijde en veelkleurig;
het schild als die van ridders tijdens een toernooi;
viooltjes, rozen, bloemen, die ieder mens doet verblinden;

en worden granaatappels omhoog gegooid;

  • Juni

In juni geef ik je een heuvel
bedekt met prachtige boompjes,
met dertig huizen en twaalf kastelen,
die om een stadje zullen staan,

met in het midden een milde bron:
met duizenden vertakkingen en beekjes,
die tuinen en gazons doorkruisen
en het fijne gras verfrissen.

Sinaasappels en ceders, dadels en citroenen
en alle andere eetbare vruchten
hangen als pergola’s in de straten;

en de mensen zijn zo verliefd
en delen zoveel attenties uit
dat het heel de wereld bekoort.
