D'acqua viva un ruscel puro e lucente,
d'Adria nel Tebro, placido scendea,
onde il campo Latin, tin forza prendea,
e Roma rinascea ricca e possente.

Fuor di Parnaso à vaggeggiar lo intente
eran le Muse, e per gustarne Astrea
torno dal ciel, e per lui sol potea
esser estinta nostra sete ardente.

Fiorian le rive di purpuree rose,
d'or era il letto e l'humor dolce tanto,
ch'avanzo tutte l'altre humane cose.

Ahi, ahi fiera stella, e pur ti puo dar vanto,
quelle fresch'ond' haver secch' e nascose,
per far noi fiume di perpetuo pianto.
