Gentle evening time is come,
Western skies are glowing,
Now the long day's work is done,
Homeward all are going;
Twilight o'er the fields so fair
Silently is falling,
Only through the soft June air
Sounds the brooklet's brawling.

Now the ploughman leaves his toil,
Now unyokes his horses,
Day by day they till the soil,
Through the meadow courses,
Each alike forget in rest
Weariness and sorrow.
Each will rise to do his best,
Once again tomorrow.

Gentle evening time is come,
Homeward all are going.
