Gentle manners, virtuous lives,
Make easy husbands, happy wives;
These are the only means we know
To make a little heav'n below.

Angry manners, vicious lives,
Make wretched husbands, cursed wives;
And hence such evils take their birth,
Which make a little hell on earth.

Two easy things will satisfy mankind;
An easy fortune and an easy mind:
But the one thing that gives a man content
Is a good conscience from a life well spent.
