General Information
Title:
- Official title of the 1524 edition: Geystliche Gesangk Buchlein Publication date and place: 1524 Wittenberg by Joseph Klug.
- Official title of the 1525 edition: Geystliche Gesangbüchlin Publication date and place: 1525 Wittenberg.
Composers: Johann Walter in collaboration with Martin Luther
Description:
38 German hymn motets and 5 latin motets, expanded in later editions to 74 german hymns and 47 latin motets in the 1551 edition. Set for 3 to 5 voices (Discantus, Altus, Tenor, Bassus and Vagans). The original part books are not conserved as a complete set. Of the first edition only T and B are available online.
After the Achtliederbuch (1524) and the Erfurt Enchiridion (1524), the Geystliche Gesank Buchleyn is the third publication with german hymns by Martin Luther, and the first choir hymnal with such songs. It is supposed that with this Gesank Buchlein Walther applied for the post of director musices at the court of Fredric the Wise, known as one of the most powerful defenders of Martin Luther.
In the successive editions, the works are sometimes adapted or replaced, and the numbring changed. A concordance is given in the 1878 reprint.
