Modern French Je ne suis pas si sot berger, Si vous tenais à mon coucher Que ne vous fasse dépouiller Robe et chemise Et puis mon flageolet Auriez à votre guise.

English translation Prose A simpleton shepherd far from it Dearest, if I were to hold you And lay you down by my side I’ll strip you bare Of your skirt and of your shirt My flute I will play to your heart’s content.

English translation Verse I am not such a dumb galoot, If off to bed we plan to scoot, That I won’t find your birthday suit ‘Neath your chemise. And then my trusty flute You may play as you please. Translation by Thomas Daughton
