Biography

John Hopkins (fl. 1549-1562) was an English country clergyman and writer of metrical versions of the psalms: his works, in combination with those of Thomas Sternhold and others, formed the basis of the first metrical psalter to be widely used in the Church of England, The Whole Book of Psalms. The collection was consequently known colloquially as 'Sternhold and Hopkins': it was also later known as the 'Old Version'.
