"The first known significant composer of polyphonic organum" (Wikipedia). Writing in the 1270's, the English scribe known as "Anonymous IV" credits Magister Leoninus with founding the School of Notre-Dame and composing the bulk of a Magnum Liber, a 'great book' whose repertory can now be reconstructed from three surviving collections. He is now identified with the Magister Leonius presbyter active from 1163 and who appears to have died in 1201.
