Lucia virgo, quid a me petis
quod ipsa poteris praestare continuo
nam et matri tuae?
Fides tua subvenit et ecce salvata es,
quia jocundum Deo in tua virginitate
habitaculum preparasti.

Sicut per me civitas Catinensium sublimatur a Christo
ita et per te Ciracusana civitas decorabitur,
...quia jocundum...

O virgin Lucy, why do you ask of me
that which you yourself can obtain
for your mother?
Your faith helped her: behold, she is well!
because you in your virginity prepared a home
for God to rejoice in.

Just as the city of Catania was taken up by Christ through me,
so the city of Syracuse is honoured through you,
...because you in your virginity…
