Mentre la notte al suo bel manto il membo ingemava di stelle
un pastorel dicea di lagrime versando un largo membo
Sante chiare del ciel vive facelle voi
sete assai men belle de gl'occhi di colei
che qui sol bela parve a gl'occhi miei.

English translation

While night bejewelled her fine cloak with stars
a shepherd, shedding floods of tears, thus spoke:
"Holy lights of the heavens, bright flames,
you are less lovely by far than the eyes of the girl
who to my eyes is the only beauty there is."
